An integral part of a dynamic center offering a wide variety of programs and services to the entire university teaching community. The Center’s liaison to the natural science departments in the College of Arts and Science, Ph.D. granting departments in the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the Owen Graduate School of Management.
Duties and accomplishments include:
- Consult with faculty on a variety of teaching issues, including course design, the interpretation of student evaluations, and collecting and interpreting mid-term student feedback.
- Consult with faculty about educational components of grant proposals, including the design, assessment, and evaluation of grants.
- Facilitate small groups of faculty through the design or redesign of course syllabi using a ‘backward design’ approach.
- Develop and lead workshops on an assortment of pedagogical topics, including course design, lecturing, the use of classroom response systems, and laboratory based learning.
- Led the Center's efforts to recruit and hire 14 graduate student employees for the 2007-08 academic year.
- Led the planning and implementation of the Center’s Fall 2006 orientations for incoming faculty, “Teaching at Vanderbilt”.
- Led the planning and implementation of the Center’s workshops and working groups for the 2005-06 academic year.
- Supervised and worked closely with the Center’s Graduate Teaching Fellows (GTFs). Projects included consultation training, and the planning and administration of programs like the Future Faculty Preparation Program (F2P2) and the Teaching Certificate program.
- Work with colleagues to transform the Center’s Teaching Certificate program to support graduate students and post-docs seeking to develop and refine their teaching skills in a scholarship of teaching and learning framework.
- Launched a group of faculty to apply Edward Tufte’s ideas about information design to engage their students with data and information in ways that enhance classroom learning.
- Manage the Center’s involvement in the Community of Scholars, a program funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) designed to introduce undergraduate students to research in the biological sciences. Responsibilities include the qualitative assessment of student learning (procedural and conceptual), and leading the mentor training for the program.
- Designed, wrote and built a website documenting the Teaching Fellows Workshop, a 2 day mentor training program for the Community of Scholars program, http://www.vanderbilt.edu/cft/hhmi/hhmi_main.htm.
- Collaborated with a team from the University Library and the Office of Innovation Through Technology to complete initial planning for a Learning Commons facility.

Previous Position
Vice President of Research, Iterations, LLC - March 2000 - April 2004
Management of a small strategic research and intellectual property management company, with strong interests in group collaboration and co-design. Accomplishments include:
- Leveraged state of the art and proprietary processes, tools and environments (e.g., DesignShop® and other collaborative events) to develop creative and innovative solutions to complex problems facing a variety of organizations. Lead role experience in many aspects of designing and facilitating collaborative workshop events. Significant experience in documenting these workshops using text, photo, and video capture and creating web and print based documentation products. Clients included a wide range of organizations from many sectors, including healthcare and education.
- Worked with the MG Taylor Corporation (http://www.mgtaylor.com/) to create and launch core training materials on a password protected website for use by network knowledge workers and license holders.
- Collaborated with members of the MG Taylor network to implement new web based technologies (e.g., wikis and blogs) for enabling more effective remote idea building and interactive dialogue.
- Developed methods for trend and technology research based upon an appreciation for the role that critical and emergent information plays in strategic development.
- Designed and maintained the company’s web presence (http://www.iterations.com/)
- Managed the protection of a diverse intellectual property portfolio, including patents, copyright, trade secrets, trade and service marks.
